Ford hopes the Fusion can hold off a stronger challenge from the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu, while also drawing closer to the top-selling Japanese sedans. It arrives as cars are facing considerable pressure from SUVs, crossovers and low gasoline prices, making sales gains hard to come by.
"These sedans are feeling pain," said Ivan Drury, a senior analyst with Edmunds.com. "If they can maintain the level of sales for the next year, that is a success in itself."
