I've been having trouble with SYNC freezing and not forwarding or forwarding too many times and with it returning to songs four or more ago when the car is started. I reset SYNC myself at the dealers recommendation--helped a little. Took it to the dealer yesterday for a SYNC specialist to look at it (reservation made by dealer Service Adviser). The dealer reset SYNC--it wasn't the day when the SYNC specialist was supposed to show up but neither the service advisor or I knew that. SYNC with USB didn't work properly before I left the dealer lot. Went back to the Service Manager--not service advisor and he promised if I'd bring in the car tomorrow morning he'd personally have the SYNC tech look at it.

Has anyone had a SYNC problem when using an USB stick and how was it fixed? cockerdogs:|

Hey cockerdogs,

Sounds like a very general issue which could be caused by several different factors. If I were in your shoes, I would try process of elimination in finding out what's going on.

After you reset SYNC system to factory defaults, do not plug in anything to the USB ports, do not connect any devices/phones via Bluetooth. See what happens for a day.

If you're at factory defaults with nothing connected and SYNC is still freezing, Sounds like dealer will have to replace the SYNC system.

In terms of USB devices, what exact problem are you having with that? Are you plugging in a flash drive, or your cell phone? Are you using Android or IOS?

I'm using a USB stick. It has a duplicate in my wife's 2014 Explorer Sport and an identical one (to the Explorer) worked fine in my prior 2015 Fusion SE--now in the FuSpo. When I don't like a song that I've put on the USB stick, I hit forward to get another song--either the steering wheel forward or the forward on the dash. Sometimes it forwards, sometimes not, sometimes forwards 2 or more songs. I use the shuttle feature--not repeats.

I'm not using a phone or other input other than the USB Stick/flash drive. The only freezing is the music player for the USB stick--nothing else is running--except the car.

Sounds like it has something to do with the stick. Could be SYNC 3 not liking the stick for some reason. The 2014/2015 car models you were referring to did not have SYNC 3 and relied on a totally different operating system.

If you don't have another stick to test with, I recommend you plug the stick into a PC, backup the music, use a program like "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool", then place the music back on the stick, and give it a whirl.

Could also be a corrupted song which could easily cause the system to freeze up. The older SYNC systems may not have been affected by it and possibly just handled it better.

I had a USB stick that worked fine in my 2011 Malibu, but did not work in my Sport. Got a different usb drive(same brand-sandisk-but significantly newer) and it works fine except it doesn't seem to support folders. I have a folder for each artist but sync just lists them all as if there were no folders. Kind of a pain to scroll through 100 songs. Haven't messed around with it yet, or even looked at the manual.

I'm having the same problem with mine, except with my iPod Classic. Just saw a Fusion customer of mine waiting in the Service Department who is having the same issue. Both of our cars are being looked at simultaneously today. I'll let you know what I find out.

Took the car to the dealer Monday--the SYNC unit was reset and just as soon as I fired it up in the dealer parking lot--same problem. I tried bigblueshock's recommendation to reformat the USB drive. I fried it. Went to WalMart and bought another drive and loaded the music on it--This one would forward like it was supposed to. However, when the ignition was turned off and back on it would re-index the drive. Called the factory and they told me the initial indexing wasn't complete. I left the car running while it was indexing and will drive it later and see if that did it.

It seems the USB stick makes a difference. I've used SanDisk, and PNY. The best results are with a new PNY. I'll Let you know if the latest changes work. cockerdogs

Worked with the regional SYNC tech yesterday. Copied music files from my 128gb Sandisk to a new 128gb Sandisk and it worked fine. Had to allow the media player to index ALL the music or the index is lost when the car was turned off.

Problem today--the entire screen died--nothing worked. Turned off the car, opened door, closed it and restarted the car. Screen came back and all is fine.

I'll let it go and see what happens next. cockerdogs

Sorry my recommendation fried your stick. It's possible the stick was on its way out. Format shouldn't have done that. If you don't have the receipt, maybe contact the company and tell them it was given as a gift. Most likely will just send you a new stick.

If you are still having an issue, file system is also important. Three main ones are EXT4, FAT32, and NTFS. If your drive is currently in FAT32 format, you could try switching to EXT4 to see if it makes a difference.

Good luck!
