So... pondering the idea of a shark fin antenna. The remote controlled car-ish antenna has bothered me since 13'...

I don't see Ford changing anything major to make an antenna work on a model that's about to be cut. Only one way to find out for sure is to get one and test (when it's actually available to order). Yes the 2019 Fusion's antenna is much smaller than the Edge/Explorer fin.

The 2018 and below Fusion antenna with the mast uses the mast as the FM/AM antenna, and the window defroster as a sort of backup antenna to get better signal. The 2019+ Fusion and the Edge/Explorer fin antenna have a wire pattern covering the entire inside of the entire plastic cover (that replaces the mast), so you still have two antennas. I saw someone report, I forget who, that FM signal decreased noticeably in a city environment but more open areas were OK with the mast removed.

The Explorer not having HD Radio is just a lack of functionality of the ACM. Same antenna technology. Both antennas have FM/AM antennas on the outside (either the mast or the wire pattern), and inside attached to the base is the satellite radio and GPS antenna modules.

Plugging the hole would probably be a good idea to keep the threads from oxidizing or rusting, but I doubt it'll hurt anything if you don't - they're sealed pretty good.

The reason I mentioned the 2018 Explorer is because my 2018 XLT does not have HD Radio and does not have SYNC Connect 4G LTE, so it has the shark fin. I've seen the 2018 Explorer XLT/Limited/Sports with the Shark Fin and mast. I have to assume they have the SYNC Connect because that's the only other difference that could explain the additional mast antenna especially on the Explorer Sport as most people or dealers that buy that model would get the SYNC Connect option/package.

Satellite shouldn't be affected, as the receiver is in the large base of the antenna. The removable mast is only for AM/FM.

Same here...noticed no difference in FM reception; but 99% of the time I’m listening to an iPod plugged in from the center console.

My satellite got much better.

As feedback on my earlier post above, so far so good on the Stubby Jr. antenna from CravenSpeed. I don't listen to AM/FM very often, but I tested it out for a bit on several different stations and found no real noticeable signal difference.

I'm also quite happy with the look, for now at least. While I still think the sharkfin is the nicest look this is a close second, for me at least. (especially on a black car) When I bought the car I assumed that a sharkfin was in the near future, but I think I'll try this out for a while and see if I can live with it, as it's far more cost effective.

For what it's worth, the customer service people at CraveSpeed were amazing! They quickly answered all of my questions (I had several) and in the end told me that any of their antenna part numbers beginning with CRMC-0705 would fit the '17 Fusion. With this information and due to availability issues in Canada, the Stubby Jr. I bought was for the Ford Escape (2013-2018). Perfect fit!

The seal on the outside and around the edge of the antenna just keeps most of the water and dirt out. The real seals are the 3 rubber seals around the screw/wire/roof hole, which are tight to the roof.

I know for sure that antennas in BMW ( at least in the models from 1995 to 2010 ) was not very good. Mercedes Benz are more successful in that. I think that the most successful antennas are in Mercedes Benz. In American and Japanese cars antenna is also good but does not catch the radio on long vibes. You can read more info about different reviews and guides on Palmgear blog , for sure you will find your thematic in which you are interested the most. I have found a lot of things for my house because of the website.
