K&N calls for cleaning and oiling the filter every 50,000 miles. I have been running K&N filters on every car I have owned since 1996. Just follow the recommended mileage interval and you should be good.
They get more restrictive as they start to clog, but also become more effective at filtering. If you clean them more often, you gain airflow, but get less filtration and shorter filter life. You also have to consider your driving conditions. If you drive on gravel or dusty roads a lot, you will need to clean them more often.

Personally, I drive on pretty clean roads and plan to clean my AFE every 3 years or 36000 miles, whichever comes first.
I have has K&N filters on various vehicles since 1998. I have cleaned them at about 50k most of the time.
Oiled AFE

Put an oiled AFE filter on my car today--took about 30 seconds--I didn't remove anything but the latches and filter--it slipped out within the space without having to remove anything else. It smoothed out daily driving--1-2 2-3 shifts and the butt dyno said it did some good. cockerdogs:D

I've had oil filters in all my cars and trucks - currently my F-150 Eco has the aFe dual filter - one for each turbo.
Just look at the filter and if it appears dirty then clean it.
