Hey y'all, had some bad luck the other day when I stopped to get some donuts on my way home from work. Looks like some low lives pulled up next to my car while I was inside and attempted to bust open my front passenger window to get at my backpack and laptop. Fortunately, it seems whatever tool they were using only penetrated the first layer, and the second layer was unable to be reached.

Even more fortunately, the theives didn't think to try the single pane window in the back instead. I got back just in time for them to see me and drive away, but the damage was done. Despite my dashcams best efforts, the offenders had no plates on their Volkswagen.

Now I am faced with a choice. Pay $450 to Safelite to have my window replaced (my insurance has a $500 deductible, so they won't help me). Or brave replacing the window with eBay wrecker part (I managed to see one acoustic glass window for the correct side for $150, but they seem very difficult to track down. The OEM replacement from Ford I think is around $400). It doesn't seem to difficult from what I've seen online, but sometimes things are different when you actually do it. Have any of you replaced the windows on this car? Any tips?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I would get the original OEM part myself. The Ford glass is higher quality than the third-party parts from what I've read. The third-party glass is, from what people have said, thinner and more fragile.

Sorry to see that happened to you! I'm glad you came back out when you did and you didn't get hurt though.

Insurance will not cover the factory part? I would argue what they want to put in is inferior
and their offer does not put your car back to the way it was.
So my insurance will cover things, but only after $500, which is about the cost of the repair anyways. I also was concerned about potentially getting a worse quality product from a party like Safelite who would be responsible for fixing it.

What I think would be best is to just buy an OEM used part off eBay for around $150 and install it myself, but that depends a lot on difficulty.

Ultimately the best way right way to do it would be take it to the dealer and have insurance pay the $800 bill or whatever it'll be, but then I'd be out $500 plus maybe having my rates raised after the fact.

Hi DAA. Sorry about the bad luck with the lowlifes. I had to have a door window replaced. My recommendation would be to buy the Ford OEM/Carlite brand replacement. Also, make sure you order/purchase the correct part number for your Fusion Sport. There are different tints (gray/brown etc.), and you obviously want it to match properly.

So get the correct part number for your vehicle, then purchase by part number.
If you do not have it already, you can obtain the correct part number from the Parts Department at your local Ford Dealer. They will access it by VIN.

Once replaced, there is programming procedure which needs to be performed to ensure proper up/down limits, anti/pinch programming etc.

Also according to your past driving/incident record and company/type of insurance, your rates should not go up for a "one-time" incident like this. Ask your agent to be sure.

Keep us updated and good luck.

There not hard, just need a 7mm 10mm and a 5.5mm. I can do one in about an hour in and out if I take my time.

Same thing happened to me in the French Quarter during Decadence festival last year. Not even anything in the car, they just wanted to rummage through it. I’m just rocking the shattered outside window. If you find a way to do it for less than $350 with Ford glass let us know. Otherwise I’m just gonna keep rocking the spiderwebs. Sorry that happened to you man; hope you’re still liking Georgia.

That sucks, but they could have gotten your laptop and you would still had a broken window. I have not replaced a window on my current fusion, but I have done others in the past and although mechanical I am not a mechanic. Watch some YouTube like this
and you can do it. Then you'll have factory glass for a lot less. Good way to kill a Saturday.

Hi DAA. Since we are now getting into insurance advice, I would also make this recommendation: If your state does not have a $0 dollar glass deductible, think about dropping your Comprehensive Deductible to $100. In most states, the premium difference is minimal.

And as previously mentioned, a one-time type of no-fault incident like this should not/would not affect your annual premium.

Keep us updated and good luck.

This is what I'll do now, didn't actually look at glass repair until now, I had thought it was a $0 deductible. So that's on me.

But you said factory part is $400 and safelite was doing it for $450, so no way safelite is giving you a new factory part.

Obvjsouly if you can get used (like new) part for cheap and do it yourself, have at it. But if not, going through insr with new ford part,.
labor is almost free after deductable since window cost is very close to that.

If you decide to do junkyard diy, I highly recommend a cheap interior trim tool kit if you don't already have one.
