Thanks for the link!

Still waiting for the EPA fuel economy figures to be released. It looks like the 2017 Fusion 2.0 turbo AWD is rated at 20 MPG city / 29 MPG hwy. I'm guessing the Sport will be somewhere around 18 / 26.

Which would actually be quite disappointing when you compare it to a car like Audi A6 quattro with a 3-liter supercharged engine with similar HP/torque numbers as the Fusion Sport, but which weighs about 4,200 lbs (about 500 lbs heavier than Fusion Sport), yet is EPA rated at 20/30 MPG.

Similarly heavy BMW 535i xDrive (4,200 lbs) is rated 20/29 MPG.
340i xDrive (3,700 lbs) is rated 22/33 MPG.
It is indeed pretty bad and this being a Ford, the overall demographic is expecting better, something more in line with what's expected of a car like it and in its price range. 18 mpg's city would just make me want something else, doing that for a short period of ownership, you'll walk out not having spent anything more or much more.

The EPA has modified how fuel economy numbers are calculated starting with 2017 models. Hence the decrease in the 2017 2.0 Ecoboost AWD Fusion. We will see similar drops from all manufactures across the board as they certify their '17 models using the new method.

All of the cars you mentioned have much more efficient 8-speed transmissions. The 6-speed manual 340i xDrive is rated at 20/29 for 2016. We will see how much that goes down with the 2017 fuel economy calculations and if it ends up in the same ballpark as the 2017 Fusion.

I do mostly city driving so weather I get 18 or 20-ish is not going to make a huge difference in my budget. If I did mostly highway travel then a 27% decrease (33 to 26) in fuel economy would be difficult to swallow.

Thanks! I had no idea. You are absolutely right.

2016 Fusion 2.0 AWD: 22/31 mpg
2017 Fusion 2.0 AWD: 20/29 mpg
I think the 2017 Fusion Sport more closely matches the:

  • BMW N55 (twin-turbo 3.0 V6) 335i xDrive w/ 6-speed Auto (300/300)
  • Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design w/ 6-speed Auto (325/354).

Both had Pre-2017 change EPA ratings of 18/27.

If the Sport model sticks around for the 3rd Gen. 2018 Fusion we might see an 8 or 9 speed automatic with much improved fuel economy.
changing subject, but ...

I was coincidentally perusing my 2017 Owners Manual, and came across page 156, and not 1 but 2 pictures of a Fusion Wagon's rear hatch. Fusion Sport Wagon!! YUMMMM!!!

Yep, there's numerous references for the wagon and hatchback Mondeo.

Both Canadian models I assume?

Nope, as far as I know the Mondeo is European, possibly Asia and other countries too. Us Canadians got the same Fusion Sport as America. The only difference being they only sold the 401A package in Canada, you can't buy a Fusion Sport in Canada with nothing other than the full options list.
