Dash Cam Mounting

Can anymore tell me if its safe to mount the camera with the 3M tape on the top of the windshield where all those black dots are. I'm not sure I think they act as some sort of sun shade.

Also the huge plastic bracket that holds the lane assist camera in place behind the mirror really makes it hard to find a good spot for a dash cam. I'm thinking now to mount it below this but worried that could hinder my field of vision.

I got a cheap cam since its my first one and just testing the waters. Its a TOGUARD CE55 Ultra HD 4K. I'm just going to run the cable across the head liner and down the pillar then across to the cigarette lighter. I'll also try connecting via USB but not sure that port provides enough power. I'd rather not hardwire it.

Any other personal install suggestions or opinions is welcomed.

Look through my build for the one I used. It replaces the bezel that covers the factory camera for the lane assist. It looks completely stock.

It's perfectly safe to mount the camera on the frit (that's what the black dots are called - learn something new everyday!). It's only there for the adhesive that keeps the glass on the car, and the bit around the mirror area is just for extra sun shading.

I mounted my cam right behind the rear-view mirror in my Edge on the bottom of the black stuff so just the lens can see the road. It's safe.

In my Fusion I ran the wire as you described down the passenger side. There's a little lip by the glove box that holds the wire up nicely.

For power, I use a 12v USB adapter, since the power outlets turn off after a little while anyways. The updated USB hubs we have for SYNC 3 may give enough power, depending on the camera, I also just do that in my Edge since the 12V is out in the open.

Can you mount the camera off to the side of the rear-view mirror (passenger side)? I did that in my old Focus, just tilted the camera a tiny bit to compensate for the curvature of the windshield.

Kinda wish I saw this before I bought my cam. I like this idea assuming the video quality is good and it provides a parking feature.

There's no screen. It's wireless and on the sd card. The quality is pretty decent and I got the rear cam.

Any chance you could post a short video to show the quality ? I'm liking this the more I think of it. I could always move the TOGUARD I just bought to my second car and get this one for the Fusion. Installation looks potentially difficult though especially the rear cam.

How does this not affect the lane assist camera ?

It can't affect the stock camera. It's just a bezel with the camera molded in. It not in the way of the stock camera at all. I'll have to see if I have the time to pull the card, run it on the laptop and them record the footage. I can tell you it's pretty good. Running anything to the rear is the same as the camera.

I got my cam as a gift, I was going to get the barrel type, but... At first, it bugged me but now I don't notice it. Looks bigger in the picture. Haven't got any good videos from it, only a cop doing a dumb ass stunt on the highway,
