Steering wheel leather disintegrating

Has anyone had an issue with this? The leather at the top of the steering wheel just randomly started falling apart and it is spreading like a super virus. 10-2 kind of guy so I know it’s not me. Condition regularly with the non reflective not greasy shenanigans every two weeks along with the rest of the interior. Thanks.

Picture attached is the beginning of its journey. Much much much worse now.

Hi Aaron. Hard to tell from the photo, but that looks almost like something cut or gouged it.

Assuming it is not a gouge or cut, have a question: When you state that you "Condition regularly with the non reflective not greasy shenanigans every two weeks...", what exactly are you using? Hope it is not a vinyl cleaner or vinyl protectant, or similar product made for cleaning and protecting vinyl? You need to use dedicated leather cleaners and conditioners. Vinyl cleaners and/or protectants can/will damage leather and the clear microcoating which protects modern automotive leather.

Leather cleaners and conditioners such as those made by Meguiar's, Mother's, Lexol, Tanners Preserve etc, are what you need to be using.

If your car is still within the 3 year/36,000 mile Bumper to Bumper Warranty, bring it in to be looked at. If it is determined to be a defect in material or workmanship, the wheel will be replaced.

Let us now what you are using to treat the leather, and good luck.

By the looks of how slick and shiny your steering wheel it, I'd have to agree that it might be the cleaners you're using. Mine at 21k miles before I swapped to an ST wheel showed no wear at all.

I'm not usually one for "just let the dealer take care of it" but in this case if you're under the b2b warranty, definitely ask to get it replaced. Do no NOT tell them you use products on it, they'd most likely use that to deny the claim saying it's not approved even if that's not the cause.
